Wall-Mounted Busyboards for Schools and Kindergartens: Turning Empty Walls into Learning Spaces
Every school has at least one stretch of hallway that just sits there — blank wall, empty space, nothing happening. It's easy to overlook, but it's also one of the easiest places in a building to add real value, and busyboards are exactly the tool for it.
A busyboard is a wall-mounted activity panel built around hands-on, interactive elements — gears, bead mazes, xylophones, shape sorters, spinning dials, and latches, usually shaped into a fun, recognizable design like an animal or a vehicle. Instead of taking up floor space the way traditional playground equipment does, busyboards use vertical space that would otherwise go completely unused. Most playground planning focuses entirely on the floor: climbers, slides, swings, safety flooring. That's important, but it also means hallways, waiting areas, and transition zones rarely get any thoughtful design at all. Busyboards fill exactly that gap, adding color, functionality, and purpose to spaces that would otherwise stay empty.
Beyond filling space, busyboards are genuinely useful developmental tools. Every element — turning a gear, sliding a bead through a maze, matching a shape, striking a xylophone key — helps children practice fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving in a low-pressure, self-directed way. It's play that happens to be building real skills at the same time. Furnicom's busyboard collection includes a wide range of animal and vehicle-themed designs, each with a different combination of activities and mechanisms, making it easy to match a busyboard to a specific hallway, age group, or classroom theme, whether it's a nursery, a kindergarten, or a preschool play area.
Play doesn't have to be confined to the ground. If your school is investing in its playground or classroom environment, the walls are worth including in that plan — they're often the easiest and most cost-effective place to add both color and educational value.
Here are some images from a recent project where we installed a range of busyboard designs across a school's hallways and play areas.
